The problem: Very few alternatives exist, and even fewer of those alternatives offer additional features that might entice longtime Goodreads users to jump ship. The StoryGraph is a thoughtful, nuanced take on the online reading diary.
Goodreads is, and has always been, best for keeping track of book lists. The StoryGraph keeps it simple, sticking to just list-making and recommendations. One of my main frustrations with Goodreads has always been its tendency toward streamlined categorization. Categorizing books has never been quite this simple, though — one book can fall into about a million different categories, depending on whom you ask. Instead, Amazon has scuttled that potential and also squelched what was fast becoming the go-to venue for online reviews, attracting far more attention than Amazon for those seeking independent assessment and discussion of books.
As those in advertising have long known, the key to driving sales is controlling information. Turow was joined in his concerns by members of Goodreads, many of whom expressed their fears about what the deal would mean on Chandler's blog. But not all authors were against the move. Hugh Howey, author of the smash hit dystopian thriller Wool — which took off after he self-published it via Amazon — said it was "like finding out my mom is marrying that cool dude next door that I've been palling around with".
While Howey predicted "a lot of hand-wringing over the acquisition", he said there were "so many ways this can be good for all involved. I'm still trying to think of a way it could suck. Its members can freely search Goodreads' database of books, annotations and reviews. This will give Goodreads Help, which is hosted on a separate tool, access to your Goodreads email address and username only. You do not have to register in order to visit Goodreads. There are many ways Goodreads Authors can participate to support our community and spread the word about their books.
Our Author Guidelines are designed to help you have the best possible experience on Goodreads. Ever since, I've loved to read — both for fun and to improve my mind. And I'm always looking for the next great book. One afternoon while I was scanning a friend's bookshelf for ideas, it struck me: when I want to know what books to read, I'd rather turn to a friend than any random person or bestseller list.
So I decided to build a website — a place where I could see my friends' bookshelves and learn about what they thought of all their books.
Elizabeth, my co-founder and now my wife wrote the site copy and I wrote the code.
