How does a trac lok work

It allows the wheels to travel at different speeds when cornering, since the tire on the outside of the turn must travel a longer distance than the tire on the inside of the turn. Most differentials from the factory come with an open-differential configuration. With this setup, the power is routed to the tire that has the least amount of traction, which can tend to be a problem when exploring off-road in certain terrain and conditions.

Locking differentials are on the other side of the spectrum. Automatic lockers can be a full differential replacement unit, like a Detroit locker. Or a lunch box—style locker that replaces the spider gears inside of the factory differential case. They both function the same in that when power is being applied to the differential, it will equally split the power to both tires.

This will force both tires to power the Jeep in any situation, such as turning the tire that has traction when the other tire is slipping in the mud. Lockers also force the tires to rotate at an equal rate when cornering. While off-road traction is increased, street driving manners are sacrificed. New posts. Search forums. Search images. Log in. Just found out i have trac-lok in my Dana 44, if i changed the clutch pack would it be any good offroad? Is it worth it? And would you recommend a certain company that makes clutch packs? Ride of the Month Winner.

A trac-lok is a limited slip differential. It's better than an open differential but not as good as a full locker off-road. So it's somewhere in between. If the clutch pack isn't working, then yeah, you should fix it, but usually you just use a gear oil with GL-5 in it.

Most gear oils come with this in it today. Reactions: b0xcar. Chris Administrator Staff Member. Your LSD will provide some benefit, but not nearly as much as a locker.

If you want to do it right, put the money into lockers. Supporting Member. The Tracloc is in my personal opinion great for on-road use like when the streets are slick from snow but next to useless offroad.

They are totally useless on a trail uneven enough to lift one of its tires up enough so it doesn't have good traction. Reactions: Chris. Then ill change the clutches temporarily untill i can get a full locker, thank you all Sent from my VTR-L29 using Tapatalk. Reactions: Tioga river Rat and Chris. Abdallah Hatough said:.
